Zagreb, the capital of the Republic of Croatia has been one of the oldest European cities and at the same time it is one of the youngest European metropoles. In the year 1994 Zagreb celebrated the 900th anniversary of the first written reference to its name, which means that the history of Zagreb dates back even deeper in the past as it can be proved by the archeological findings.
Being situated at the crossroads of Eastern and Western Europe, Zagreb has belonged to the western civilisation since the time immemorial and it has been a cultural, commercial and political centre of Croatia. With the population of more than one million inhabitants, it is the biggest city in Croatia.
It is situated at the foot of Mountain Medvednica which protects it from the north and the Sava River in the south. It is surrounded by beautiful landscapes, wooded hills, old castles, lakes, rivers as well as thermal spas.
Zagreb is a middle-European city. Its oldest parts – Kaptol and Gradec – are among the most beautiful European old settlements with archaic architecture preserved even today.
