Grasmere, Windermere, Keswick and the Langdale Valley are all nearby so we are in an ideal location for your short break in the Lake District or your holiday where you can explore the rest of the Lake District and Cumbria. With our private car park you are able to leave your car safely and enjoy the scenery on foot, by bus or cycle. How about fishing? there is a wealth of fishing in the area and guests of the Smallwood House may use our permits to fish the waters of Windermere, Ambleside & District Angling Association.
The house was built around 1880 using Westmorland Slate quarried from local mines. Although the building is over 100 years old the interior has been updated to offer accommodation which is pleasant and tasteful and includes en-suite bedrooms with tea/coffee making facilities, televisions, clock radios and hairdryers. We do have a residential license therefore you may enjoy a drink in our comfortable lounge before going out in the evening. You may also enjoy a drink with your meal in our own dining room (pictured right). All our meals are homemade and freshly prepared. You can start your day with freshly cooked Cumbrian breakfast and a selection of fruit, cereals and yoghurt. A continental style breakfast is also available for those with a lighter appetite. We keep a selection of vegetarian and gluten free foods for those who prefer them. If you should have any other special food choices please do let us know. A regularly updated table d'hote is available and we are happy to cater for any special dietary requirements if given prior notice. We try to create an informal atmosphere in which guests can feel relaxed and comfortable. In the lounge, guests can enjoy a drink before dinner, chat together or simply relax. All of our 12 rooms are en-suite, most now have under-floor heating in the en-suites and are fully tiled. All rooms are decorated and furnished to a high standard and have colour TVs, tea and coffee making facilities, clock radios and hairdryers and are fully central heated. Family rooms are available and groups can also be accommodated in twin and triple rooms. Our two single rooms are great favourites. The morning sun fills the room with a warm glow and helps you start the day with a sunny warm feeling. The view of Wansfell, gives you the incentive to pull on your boots and get out onto the fells for the day. The romantic four poster room is pictured on the right.
