The Palais Coburg, in the heart of Vienna , is a fascinating building whose architectural uniqueness brings to life six centuries of history. Tradition and innovation, research, culture and forward-looking technologies are brought together here in a manner unique in the world. The guiding principle of "Preserving the past - shaping the future" is a living reality. Relaxing, feeling at ease, the creative exchange of ideas, thrilling encounters and gastronomic delights in a historic-modern ambience are all part of this outstanding concept. The Palais Coburg is a wholly special place.
The Palais Coburg was built in the period 1840-45 by Duke Ferdinand of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha (1785-1851) on the Braunbastei ['Brown Bastion'] - a part of the city defences dating back to the 16 th century. It is thanks to this "super-construction" that a large part of the Renaissance fortification, in particular the casemates, have been preserved for us today. The designs for the Palais, dating from 1839, are by the architect Karl Schleps, who was practically unknown in Vienna. Following his sudden death in 1840, the building of the Palais was undertaken by the master builder Adolph Korompay. The Late Neo-Classical/Early Historicist building is notable above all for its portico with its freestanding columns in the central section of the façade; this feature soon led to the Palais being given an affectionate nickname by the locals, the "Spargelburg" [literally, the "castle of asparagus"]. As early as 1849, parts of the Palais had already been adapted and leased as a means of earning money. At the end of the Second World War, the Palais was damaged by artillery fire and bombing. The right section of the portico on the Coburgbastei was struck by a bomb and two of the statues were lost from the Attic level.
The POK Pühringer Privatstiftung, a private foundation established in 1995 in Vienna, is a charitable body. Its aims are to promote culture and academic study in general, and in particular to encourage self-responsibility, public-spiritedness and entrepreneurial action. The POK Pühringer Privatstiftung intends to promote this social change in the rooms of the Palais Coburg, which have been revitalised under its commission.
In Austria, foundations of this kind enjoy considerable tax reliefs, and this presents them with the opportunity to undertake works in the general public interest. The POK Pühringer Privatstiftung provides subsidies from its own funds, in particular for difficult projects with high elements of risk which have an educational purpose and which are backed by convincing and scientifically-argued proofs of economic added value: * Restoration of the Palais Coburg as an historic building, together with commercial and financial strategies to create around 100 jobs and to provide proof that such "uneconomic projects" can meaningfully be pursued. * "Capital market conferences in the Palais Coburg" for entrepreneurs, investors and donors, with a focus on increasing equity returns through innovative use of the capital markets, in combination with patronage geared to the public good. * A cultural self-financing project with the Vienna Boys' Choir, focussing on equity capital formation through optimising cash-flow from securities and loans. The POK Pühringer Privatstiftung is a general sponsor of the Vienna Boys' Choir. * Cooperation with the Theatre in der Josefstadt * Other projects: Vienna Children's Theatre, scholarships for study at a Gymnasium (higher secondary school).

The Imperial Suites, above the ceremonial rooms on the second floor, are furnished in magnificent splendour and are the most impressive room category. The lower level offers a generous living-room, a large terrace with a view over the Palais gardens and the City Park, a luxurious kitchen and a guest WC. The upper level accommodates the bedroom and a large bathroom, in some instances with a whirlpool bath and sauna. The furnishing is in the elegant Empire style, supplemented with antique writing desks from the Late Biedermeier period or in the Directoire style. Silk curtain decorations, from soft cream tones through stunning rust-reds to strongly-contrasting variations in blue and gold, lend the suites individuality and comfort, with antique Lobmeyer chandeliers and wall lights radiating warmth and casting light onto the history of the Palais.
The Palais suites, situated on the first and second floors, offer a view over the Palais gardens. The furnishing is classically elegant, similar in design to the Imperial suites. On the lower level, they have a general living area, a well-appointed kitchen and guest WC. The upper floor accommodates the bedroom and a large bathroom, in some instances with a whirlpool bath or an extra-large tub. The furnishing of each suite is unique to the individual suite in this category as well. The furniture, chosen in the 18th century French and Italian style (Louis XVI/Directoire), is combined with antique chandeliers and wall lights, curtain decorations in silk, taffeta silk and moiré fabrics, and wool carpets which have been specially designed and made.
The City suites in the first to third floors all come with a view over the old city centre of Vienna. They are mainly arranged over two storeys, with the lower floor being equipped with a living room, kitchen and guest WC. The upper level accommodates the bedroom and a luxurious bathroom. The furnishings are in cherrywood and gossamer-like taffeta silks, lending these suites a freshness and lightness of touch.
The Modern suites are situated in the third floor and in the attic floor, with views over the roofs of the old city centre. They are furnished in a modern design, each one unique and named after the individual architecture of each suite: Loft, Penthouse, Wintergarten (Conservatory) and Patio.

A massage facility integrated in the SPA area offers a further opportunity for guests to relax and pamper themselves. The treatments available range from traditional massages to lymph drainage, foot reflexology massages and connective tissue massages.
Traditional massage has beneficial effects on mental and physical well-being both for healthy people and for people with ailments. The aim is to achieve improved circulation and to relax the muscles.
Every part of the human body has its designated area in the foot, the reflex zones, which reflect the current state of stress on the organs and how the body tissue is functioning. Using soft, deliberate movements, the stressed zones are detected and treated.
Using special pressure movements and circular stroking, the lymph channels are stimulated to improve their function of removing toxins from the body tissue. The aim is to achieve a thorough detox and purification of the body. This allows the body to develop greater strength in fighting off infections, and generally puts the body back in harmony.
Connective tissue massage is targeted on the body's reflex zones. These are situated under the skin, and transmit signals to the organs and the brain. The fingertips are used to develop sensations of pressure and pulling, which bring about a feeling of stimulation. It improves the circulation, thereby easing tenseness in the back.
