The island of Madeira is located in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and it occupies an area with about 741 km2. The distance of the continental Portuguese coast is of 1.000 km, being closer of the African continent, about 700km. Its name is originates from its dense forest that the Portuguese discoverers found, in their passage for the island, about 1420, one year later than the landing in Porto Santo, the other inhabited island of the Archipelago of Madeira. There are, still, other uninhabited islands that constitute rich flora reservations and fauna, nominated, the Desertas and Salvagens. The capital is the city of Funchal, placed in the south coast of Madeira, with a population at about 120.000 inhabitants. There are still 4 more cities: Machico, Santa Cruz, Câmara de Lobos and Santana. As all the beautiful places they have its legends and mysteries. In Machico, for example, we savoured Robert Machim's legend and Ana D´Arfet, a couple of shipwrecks, passionate, that they would have found, in this stops, its last refuge, before the Portuguese discoverers' arrival. Madeira is, at present, very known by its natural beauty and its temperate climate makes, of this Archipelago, a very sought destiny, during the whole year. The Roca Mar is located in the south coast of the island of Madeira, in the tourist zone of Caniço de Baixo, located between the city of Funchal and Santa Cruz's city. The ATALAIA DIVING CENTER is situated adjacent to the underwater natural park, directly at the sea, in the “Lido-Area” of the Hotel Rocamar in Caniço de Baixo. The Atalaia Diving Center offers individual diving – away from mass-tourism- for a quiet relaxed vacation. With 18 years of experience, this tells its own tale... The big house-diving-area has depths of 3-30 meters offering something for everyone. It stretches from steep-walls over canyons to a big cave. For the diving-trips to the national park, we have a rubber-dinghy and day-trips at the east side are spent on a typical Madeira wooden-boat. Diving courses are for beginners up to pro based on Training and Safety- Standards from PADI and CMAS. Snorkel equipment for rent, try- dives, diving with children. The diving center is equipped with 20 complete units, new and always in top condition, for rent.
Activities and useful structures in the proximity's, well close to you. In the villa of Caniço you will find a Policlinic, a health Centre, Florists, Cabs, Hairdressers, Chemist, Bank, Mini-market, Restaurants and Bars, Mail, Squash, Bus to Funchal 14 times a day. The activities and comforts in the neighbourhood of the hotel are varied, taking advantage of inclusively, the proximity's of the Royal Orchid, an Aparthotel of the same hotel Group, located next to the Roca Mar that has several services at your disposal. Examples that you can find: Heated interior pool and external, sauna, Turkish bath, massage, gym Nautilus with aerobics. If you want, you can frequent a Gasino, at a distance of 25 minutes, by car. There exist also in the area, two golf fields, of the best of Europe: The field of golf of the Santo da Serra is at 13 km of distance and the Palheiro Golfe at about 7km, both with 18 holes.
