Hotel Brosundet is a distinctive combination of old and new. The quirks and personality of a one hundred years old building go hand in hand with the requirements of a modern hotel. By way of example, one room has a difference in floor height of 12 cms across the room, while at the same time you have wifi internet access free of charge throughout the hotel. It is also a friendly place with a priority on service, with for example tea and coffee available free of charge throughout the day in the lobby area. Naturally all of the usual hotel facilities are available.
Hotel Brosundet was originally one of Ålesund's many wharfside fishing warehouses. These buildings were originally used to receive the fishing catch and for its onward distribution. The building was built directly up from the seabed just above the water level in order that the boats could dock immediately adjacent to offload their catch. Similarly the finished product could be offloaded in a similar manner to other boats. It is a happy result of the practical requirements of the building for its original use that now many of the hotels rooms overlook the harbour at close quarters. You can even fish from many of the rooms!
The building dates from 1906 and was built by the fish wholesaler Peder Devold, as a receiving and distribution warehouse. In 1932 the building was purchased by another wholesaler, T. Berset, and to this day the building is still referred to by some locals as the "Berset-bua". The entire facade of the building is protected, along with many internal features. In addition a complete shop remains exactly as it was in years gone by.
Svinøya lies off the coast, just 12 km from Stadt, famous as one of the most weather beaten straits in Norway. The lighthouse was inaugurated on 1st September 1905, and was manned for exactly 100 years. The inaccessibility of the island makes landing even in good weather difficult, and often resulted in that the lighthouse crew was isolated for weeks on end. Early on the lighthouse had a crew of three. The lighthouse keeper, and assistant and a reserve assistant, In 1952 the watch was changed to a shift system, and the crew increased to four so that one of the crew was off shift at all times, and could be with his family ashore. Svinøy Lighthouse was manned by Germans during the occupation in WW II, and was bombed by allied aircraft. You can still see damage resulting from the attacks.
The last crew left the lighthouse on 1st September 2005, and the lighthouse beacon and weather reporting where automated. The main house has been upgraded with among other facilities a shower and toilet, but otherwise the buildings are exactly as they were when built in 1905. Despite the extreme location, and that the island is only 900 metres long and 300 metres wide, there is an almost unbelievable multiplicity of flora, rock species and bird species – and not least weather conditions. All off 44 higher plant types have been identified and 16 different nesting bird species have been registered.
Writing about the December hurricane in 1979, Elias Nilsen wrote in a letter to the Meteorological Institute that "it would be nice to know the strength of the wind in the highest gusts, because the needle of the gauge went to maximum and couldn’t register the full strength of the wind. I have more than 30 years service in lighthouses in exposed locations, but this is without doubt the worst weather I have ever seen of sea blizzards and spray". Lighthouse Keeper Robert Pareliussen could also report that when the hurricane was at its worst the whole island was shaking under the assault. It was so bad at one time that the bed actually moved.
